This is a sample questionnaire, answers are not saved. You will find the template ready in your Quanda account in the Questionnaire library.

How to prepare versions of a design for testing

The result of a design survey is only as good as the fairness with which you show the versions. When one of them looks more finished or is bigger, people rate the quality of the sample, not the design itself. Quanda recommends sticking to these principles:

  • Two to five versions: more options tire respondents and split the votes.
  • One image with numbers: in Quanda each question has one image, so combine the versions into one and number them clearly. Name the options below the image with the same numbers.
  • Equal conditions: the same size, background and text, so that the design is compared, not the quality of the sample.
  • No hints about who designed what: do not name the author or say which version the management prefers.
  • The design in use: for a logo also show a smaller version, for example on a business card, for a leaflet show the whole page, not just a detail.

The example on this page tests four versions of a logo for the fictional Mora café. In your survey, your own design takes the place of the image.

How to send a design testing survey from Quanda

You prepare the survey from the template in a few minutes, the image with the versions takes the most time. Have the designer prepare it together with the designs.

  1. Create a survey in Quanda from the Design / graphic design survey template. The procedure is in the help article Creating and setting up an online survey.
  2. In the first question open the Image tab and upload one image with the numbered versions. Rename the options to Design 1, Design 2 and so on and delete the ones you do not need.
  3. In the Distribution step switch the survey status to Ready to use. Quanda generates a link that leads straight to the survey.
  4. Send the survey to customers with the distribute by e-mail option, so that the answers are saved to the contacts. Share the link with people outside your contacts, for example on social media.
  5. Keep an eye on the number of answers in Analysis of answers and evaluate them once you have 50 to 100.

How to evaluate the answers from a design survey

The number of votes tells you which version won. Why it won and what to fine tune only comes out of the open answers.

  1. Open Analysis of answers in the survey and in the chart of the first question see how many votes each version received.
  2. Use the advanced filter to select the respondents who chose the winning version, and read their reasons for the choice and their first associations.
  3. Compare the answers to the question of what kind of company would use the design with your industry and the impression you want to make.
  4. Use the same filter to compare how attractive and engaging each version is, not just the winning one.
  5. Write down the criticism from the last question as a list of changes for the designer and download the Final report as a PDF for those who decide on the design.

How to decide when no version clearly wins

A close result is common in a design survey and on its own does not tell you which version to choose. Quanda recommends deciding in this order:

  • Fit with the industry: the version for which people correctly guess what you do takes priority.
  • Associations: compare the words that came to people's minds with the values you want to communicate, for example reliability, speed or tradition.
  • Weak spots: a version with minor criticism of colour or font is easier to fine tune than a version people criticise as a whole.
  • Combining strengths: when people praise different elements in two versions, have the designer combine them into a new design.
  • Second round: test the two best versions or the new combined design again with a different group of respondents.

The personal taste of the management is a valid argument, but as the last one, not the first.

Frequently asked questions about design testing

A design survey is a questionnaire in which people from the target group choose between several versions of a graphic design and explain their choice. It is also called a logo test, a logo poll or a vote on designs. The decision then does not rest on the taste of a few people in the company, but on the opinion of those the logo, leaflet or packaging is aimed at.

Quanda recommends two to five versions. The template in Quanda has five options, delete the ones you do not need. More versions tire respondents and split the votes so much that none of them wins.

In Quanda each question has an Image tab where you upload one JPG or PNG file. Combine the versions into one image and number them, then name the options below it Design 1, Design 2 and so on. The example on this page works exactly like that. The procedure is in the help article Building a survey, question types.

Customers and people from the target group, not colleagues. Colleagues know the brief and the author of the design, and their answers tend to be cautious. If you also want to reach people outside your contacts, share a public link to the survey, for example on social media.

Quanda recommends collecting 50 to 100 responses. If the result is still close, do not just collect more votes. Read the reasons for the choice and test the two best versions in a second round. How to do it is described in the section How to decide when no version clearly wins.

Read the reasons for the choice and the associations. You will often find that the chosen design captures the industry better or looks more trustworthy, and that matters more to customers than personal taste.

The question checks whether the design captures your industry. When people say a logo of an accounting firm belongs to a toy shop, the design says something different about the company than you want. You may not see it in the popularity of a version, but you will see it in this question.

Yes, the template works for any graphic design: a logo, a leaflet, packaging, a banner, a business card or the design of a new web page. A finished website that is already live should be rated by how it is used, and that is what the Website evaluation survey is for.

A design survey collects opinions on designs before you use them. An A/B test compares how people behave with two live versions, for example how many of them click in an e-mail. For e-mail campaigns Quanda offers A/B testing, see the help article How to create and set up an e-mail campaign with A/B testing.

Only when the respondent came from an e-mail campaign sent from Quanda. An answer from a public link is anonymous. The difference is described in the help article Distribution.

The template is free in all Quanda plans with the Surveys module switched on. You only pay for the Surveys module, and the pricing page calculates its price for your number of contacts. In the 14 day trial you can create a survey for up to 100 respondents, see the help article Starting a trial and what it offers.

Yes, the template is only a model and you can rewrite or delete its questions and add your own. A question about the respondent's relationship to the company is useful, for example, so that you can compare regular customers with new people. But do not make the survey too long, a respondent completes seven questions in about 3 minutes. Question types are described in the help article Building a survey, question types.

Quanda recommends running a design survey for one week. In that time even people who do not read e-mails every day will respond, and the decision on the design is not dragged out. If you do not have 50 to 100 responses after a week, also share the link to the survey on social media.

The template is in the Questionnaire library in Quanda in Czech, English, Slovak and Polish. You can reach customers abroad in their own language and edit the questions just as in the English version.
